Why Lobsters?

As we're sure most of you are wondering, where did "Wandering Lobsters" come from? To put it simply, it's a reference to an episode from the sitcom, Friends, where the character Phoebe explains her lobster theory to show how she knows Ross and Rachel were meant to be. She states, "It's a known fact that lobsters fall it love and mate for life. You can actually see old lobster couples walking around there tank holding claws." We picked up the nickname ourselves when we first started dating in college, and for whatever reason it has stuck with us since then.

About Us

We’re just a normal couple from Indiana with who has a passion for living life to the fullest…and of course that includes traveling the world!

We met and started dating during our fresman year at Purdue University in 2005.

Although we had some experience with travel, neither of us had extensive travel experience before meeting.  Sam went to Ecuador in high school with his family.

Erin stayed in France for a summer in high school to study French and live with a family in a small town in Normandy.

Our first trip together came almost a year and half after that.  When we were 20, we decided to backpack for a few weeks out in California.  You can see details of the trip in Past Aventures.

After California, we caught the traveling bug and made a pact to take one trip together every year.  You can also see the details of our other trips in Past Adventures too.  Sometimes the trips were more elaborate than others, but we have always taken off every year since then to explore new places together.  Some of those places include New York City, the Great Smoky Mountains, Europe, and Costa Rica.

We never considered a round the world trip or long-term travel until Erin saw the Andrus family on Oprah one day.  Not only did Anne and Tom Andrus travel the world for an entire year, they took their four kids with them!  We were so inspired! You can still read about about their trials and triumphs of traveling for a year on their blog Six In The World.  They opened us up to this whole new community of round the world travel.  And this became our new dream!

Saving up all our money and deciding what we want to do for our “Big Trip” has taken a while, but we’re finally making the dream a reality! In October 2012, we will live on a 6-month voyage that will take us throughout Eastern/Southern Africa and South America, cramming in as much adventure and as many cultural experiences as we can.  Follow us as we count down to day we leave and along our winding journey!
